The Complete Guide to Membership NFTs and Ticket NFTs

On HEXA, anyone, whether an individual or a company, can issue and sell membership NFTs and ticket NFTs. This page clearly summarizes what issuers need to know before issuing: the steps, the benefits and the points to note.

Two types of NFT you can issue

Membership NFT

An NFT that can carry perks with no expiry that do not lose value when used.

  • Free drinks, forever
  • Free shampoo and massage, forever
  • 10% off at all times

*The perk must not decrease in number of uses when used (see Point to note ① for details)

Ticket NFT

An NFT for which you can set a number of uses and an expiry (within 120 days).

  • 10 free all-you-can-eat visits (within 120 days)
  • 5 free gym visits (within 120 days)
  • Products delivered every month (within 120 days)

*More than 120 days is possible for exempt issuers such as local governments (a lawyer's confirmation is required)

Benefits of issuing as NFTs

Prevents counterfeiting and fraudulent use

  • Authenticity guaranteed by blockchain
  • No copies or fakes in circulation
  • Lower costs with no dedicated system needed

Trade in Japanese yen alone

  • No crypto or wallet needed
  • Buyers can pay in yen
  • Easy and reassuring even for beginners

Greater visibility and a secondary market

  • Listed on HEXA, where more than 160,000 NFTs are in circulation
  • Liquidity through the secondary market
  • Set a royalty of up to 10% on resales

Ticket NFTs can be sold with a set number of uses and an expiry date. Ticket NFTs show the number of uses and the expiry date as follows.

When you buy one, the remaining number of uses and the expiration date of the item are displayed, and it can be transferred under the terms and rules set by the issuer.

The expiry date and remaining uses are also shown on resale, as follows.

Start at zero cost

  • No costs at all before you sell
  • Fees apply only when an NFT sells
  • No maintenance or management fees

Proof of ownership shown on a smartphone

Buyers can display a proof-of-ownership screen from My Page → "Owned NFTs". It shows the NFT title, image, holder name and the current time (updated every second in real time), making it easy to show at a store.

Issuers are notified when a ticket is used

When a ticket NFT is used, the user's email address and the date and time of use are automatically sent to the issuer's email address. This greatly reduces checking work at the store.

Lock-up feature to restrict use

Once a ticket is used, resale and transfer are prohibited for a set period determined by the issuer. When it is used, the issuer is also notified of the user's registered email address and that the ticket has been used. Please note that HEXA is not involved in any way in the use of ticket NFTs, so we cannot respond to inquiries about them.

Holder-only community feature (optional)

You can set up a community that only NFT holders can join, to share exclusive information and let holders interact with each other. Use it to build a fan base over time.

Steps to issue (overall flow)

1. Design the content

Decide between a membership NFT and a ticket NFT, and design the perks, price, quantity, expiry, lock-up period and so on. Check compliance with the relevant laws at this stage (see the points to note section for details). If anything is unclear, please consult a lawyer.

2. Apply for issuance and review on HEXA

Enter the required information on HEXA's issuance page and apply to issue the NFT. Even if the NFT passes HEXA's review, HEXA does not individually guarantee its legality. Issuers must check this themselves.

3. List on the marketplace and start selling

After passing review, the NFT is listed on the HEXA marketplace, and a sale is completed when a buyer comes along. The proceeds, minus the applicable fees, are transferred to you.

4. Buyers show and use the NFT

Buyers display their proof of ownership from My Page on their smartphone. The issuer checks the screen and provides the perk or ticket. For ticket NFTs, when the buyer taps the "Use" button, the use is recorded and the issuer is notified.

Ticket NFTs: how buyers use them

Open My Page › Select "Owned NFTs" › Display the ticket › Tap "Use ticket" › The issuer is notified

After a ticket is used, resale and transfer are prohibited for a period set by the issuer.

Points to check before issuing

Point to note ①: Legality of membership NFTs (Payment Services Act)

Issuers must confirm and represent that the NFT does not qualify as a prepaid payment instrument

Under the Issuer Terms of Use, issuers themselves must confirm that the NFTs they issue do not qualify as prepaid payment instruments under Article 3, Paragraph 1 of the Payment Services Act.

The content must meet all of the following:

  • It does not state or record property value such as a monetary amount
  • It is not a certificate or similar issued in exchange for consideration corresponding to an amount or quantity
  • It is not used to pay for goods or services
  • Its value does not decrease each time it is used (types where the number of uses decreases are not allowed)

Note: Passing HEXA's review does not guarantee legalityHEXA cannot confirm or guarantee the legality of individual NFTs. Issuers must check this themselves. If anything is unclear, please consult a lawyer (HEXA cannot provide legal advice).

Point to note ②: Compliance with other relevant laws

Check relevant laws other than the Payment Services Act as well

Depending on the content and type of NFT, additional regulations such as the Act against Unjustifiable Premiums and Misleading Representations or local ordinances may apply. Issuers should check the relevant laws.

Point to note ③: Prohibitions under the Act against Unjustifiable Premiums and Misleading Representations

The following perks are prohibited

  • Prize draws that "only NFT holders can win"
  • Schemes where "NFT holders have better odds of winning"

Because NFTs are resold at freely set prices, it is difficult to keep prizes within the limits of the Act against Unjustifiable Premiums and Misleading Representations. There is a risk of violating that Act or committing the crime of gambling.

Point to note ④: Scope of responsibility when problems arise

HEXA cannot handle disputes between issuers and buyers

  • Disputes over whether perks are provided must be resolved between the issuer and the buyer
  • HEXA does not answer inquiries about using tickets
  • Disputes over secondary sales must also be resolved between the parties

Points for buyers (what issuers should know)

Under the Buyer Terms of Use, HEXA does not guarantee the perks of membership and ticket NFTs. Buyers purchase on trust in the issuer, so it is important for issuers to provide perks in good faith.

  • Describe the perks accurately and clearly
  • Prepare rules and terms in advance so that buyers can use the NFT with confidence
  • Show buyers clearly whom to contact if problems arise

Examples of membership and ticket NFTs issued on HEXA

Through a comprehensive partnership agreement with Nishikawa Town, Yamagata Prefecture, and a comprehensive business alliance with Tobu Top Tours Co., Ltd., HEXA has so far supported the circulation of a wide range of NFTs, such as a ticket NFT that lets you invite the mayor of Nishikawa Town, Yamagata Prefecture, to give a talk, an NFT with membership that gives free entry to Akiyoshido Cave in Mine City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and an Infinite Fruit Ticket NFT that brings you fruit and other produce every year.

So that not only municipalities but any individual or company can easily do the same, HEXA has features for selling and circulating membership NFTs and ticket NFTs.

Specifically, it can be used for purposes such as those below. Issuers are responsible for designing their products in compliance with the Payment Services Act, the Act against Unjustifiable Premiums and Misleading Representations and other relevant laws.
